Instructions
- Download Tumblenote and open the Zip file by double-clicking it. Double-click the widget file “Tumblenote” to open it in the Mac OS X Dashboard.

- Click the small “i” button in the bottom-right corner of Tumblenote to flip to the back.
- Enter your tumblr.com email address and password to log in.
- If you’re using Tumblenote to post to the primary blog that came with your account, leave the Blog field blank. If you want to post to any secondary blog other than the main one, enter its web address.
- Tumblenote will automatically check for updates to its software and notify you of newer versions. If you would like to be notified, ensure “Check for software updates” is checked.
- Click the “Done” button to flip back to the front.
- Using the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner, select which type of post you would like to make.
- Enter your post into the provided text-entry fields. These fields change purpose, depending on what type of post you are making:
- Text posts use a title box and a body box.
- Photo posts use a caption box and a photo or image URL (web address) box. You can optionally drag and drop an image file from your hard drive onto the text area and it will be uploaded with the post (5 MB maximum).
- Quote posts use a quote body box and a source box.
- Link posts use a title box, a URL box, and a description box.
- Chat posts use a title box and a dialogue body box. Format the dialogue text like this:
Person 1: Yo!
Person 2: What’s up?
Person 1: Errything!
etc. - Video posts use a YouTube / Vimeo URL or HTML code box and a caption box. If your video is on a video site like Vimeo or Youtube, simply insert the URL of the video’s web-page. Other video sites work too, such as Dailymotion. Any other online video content can be included with an HTML <embed> tag. Also, you can optionally drag and drop a video file from your hard drive onto the text area and it will be uploaded with the post (10 MB maximum).
- Audio posts use an MP3 file URL box and a caption box. Simply insert the URL to the MP3 file to include it in your post. Also, you can optionally drag and drop an MP3 file from your hard drive onto the text area and it will be uploaded with the post (5 MB maximum).
- Enter tags in the last text area. You can separate each tag with commas or by placing them in full quotes. For instance:
art, illustration “drawing”
will result in the tags #art #illustration #drawing - When you have finished, click the “Post” button in the bottom-left corner to post it to your blog. The status area to the right of the button should display the message “Posted,” confirming that your post was sent.
- In all cases, the larger text area cannot be left blank but the smaller text boxes are optional.
- You can click the Tumblr logo in Tumblenote’s upper-left corner as a shortcut to the tumblr.com Dashboard. If you haven’t done so already, you may need to log in to the Tumblr website.
Status messages
Status and error messages will be displayed in the area to the right of the “Post” button on the front of the widget. These are all the possible messages you might see:
“Posted”
Your post has been successfully posted to Tumblr.
“Software update available”
A newer version of Tumblenote’s software is available. Click the link or go to http://tumblenote.tumblr.com/ to download the latest version.
“Incorrect login info”
Your email address, password, or both were incorrect. Check that you have properly entered these into the appropriate field on the back of the widget and try again. This message may also occur if you enter the address of a blog into the Blog field and you are not a member of that blog. If the problem continues, check that you can fully log in at tumblr.com — if not, there may be a problem with your account and you should contact Tumblr support staff.
“Error in post formatting”
There was at least one error while sending your post to Tumblr or saving it in your blog. You may not have filled in a text field required for making a post. For any type of post, the smaller text boxes are optional, but the larger one cannot be left blank. Ensure you have filled in the large text box and try posting again. If that’s not the problem, the data you have entered into one of the text boxes may not be allowed, such as HTML in the URL field of a Photo post. If you are uploading a photo, audio or video file, it may be beyond the size limits or it may be a file type that isn’t allowed by Tumblr. Ensure you are using allowable formatting and try posting again.
“Blog not found”
The blog address you entered in the Blog URL field on the back of the widget is not valid. Check that you have entered it correctly and try again. If you are attempting to post to the primary blog that came with your tumblr.com account, you don’t need to fill in this field; try clearing it so it’s blank.
“Can’t connect to Tumblr”
The widget couldn’t establish a proper Internet connection to Tumblr. Check your Internet connection and its settings and try again. If your connection does appear to work, check that you can access tumblr.com, to ensure that the Tumblr website is accessible and running properly.
“HTTP Error ###”
If an error occurred that doesn’t fit into any of the above categories, this message will display with a three-digit error code number. The number is a standard HTTP Status Code, for which you can easily look up information (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes). Sometimes, restarting Tumblenote will resolve any errors you may have been getting; to do this, click on the widget, then press ⌘-R (Command-R) on your keyboard. Restarting your computer may also fix the problem. Otherwise, if you are uploading a photo, audio or video file, Tumblenote may not be able to process it due to special text characters in the filename or in the path of folders leading to the file; rename or move the file and try again.
“Error: Comma in filename”
If you are uploading a photo, audio or video file, Tumblenote may not be able to process it due to special text characters in the filename or in the path of folders leading to the file. Particularly, Tumblenote cannot accept files with “,” commas in the name or folder path. If you are having trouble, try renaming files so they don’t have commas or other special characters, or try moving them to a different location on your hard drive before uploading.
System requirements
Tumblenote 5 has been tested on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and should also work on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later.
